As the economy continues to improve, employers are finding it more difficult to hire qualified workers to fill available jobs, especially in manufacturing and construction which are two of the primary industries in this area.

Redwood Area Development Corporation was made aware of the hiring challenges from Northstar Systembuilt and Schult Homes in Redwood Falls on their recent business visits. Both companies have seen an increased demand for skilled workers but are having difficulty finding applicants to meet those requirements. This is a need identified among other manufacturing companies in the area.

The RADC met last week with representatives from Minnesota West Community & Technical College and the SW MN Workforce Center (DEED and SW MN Private Industry Council) to discuss the possibility of offering a new training for businesses such as construction and carpentry skills.

Potential training for businesses includes basic knowledge, terminology, use of tools and equipment, basic print reading, construction math, safety and other essential skills. This training will provide a much needed help for building a manufacturing career. Completion of the training would qualify participants for entry-level employment in the manufactured housing industry as well as in general construction.

The training would be offered by the SW MN Career Pathway Partnership, and funded through a DEED Adult Workforce Development grant which could help cover the cost of the training for eligible participants, making this a unique opportunity to learn the skills to get started in high demand manufacturing industries in southwest Minnesota.
